We just made it home from Porto Alegre, Brazil and I have so much to share with you. Debbie and I will share our experience with you very soon.
But for now let me show you a few pictures.
This is a "favela" or an illegal invasion of public land by the poor. As these communities grow in size the government eventually acknowledges their invasion and allows people to stay, but does very little to provide services.
The Lutheran church in Brazil has a number of ministries in these settlements. The ministry plan for most of our missions is to open a school within the fevela and begin to care for the children and families. There a many schools that have 400-900 students.
He is a living saint who works in this community. He led us on a walk through the neighborhood. As we passed by homes people would greet him warmly. When these two girls saw Rev. Krug they yelled out "Pastor!" and ran to meet him.
The school that he started is about half completed. They plan to care for about 100 of the neighborhood children while the parents work during the day collecting recycling materials to sell to recyclers. The children will be fed, taught the basics, and learn about Jesus each day.
This is the construction site.
It is a simple structure but it will be a mansion of peace and God's love for these kids.
The name of the school is Open Heart, as in the Open Heart of Jesus for the children.
There are many more stories to share and many important questions to prayerfully ask: How does God desire to use Ascension Lutheran in His work in Brazil?
I look forward to asking these question of our Lord Jesus with you.
Blessings,
Pastor Scott Goltl
